On 27th October, Ilwad Elman was awarded the German Africa prize during a ceremony in Berlin, Germany. German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas presented this year’s award to Ilwad in honour of her work in Somalia.
On the occasion, Ilwad tweeted that she was honoured by the recognition.
Elman Peace is a non-profit organization which was founded in 1990 by Elman Ali Ahmed, Ilwad’s father. Ilwad was raised in Canada and returned to Somalia in 2010 to work alongside her mother and Executive Director of Elman Peace, Fartuun Aden.
Over the years, Ilwad’s work has been internationally recognized and celebrated. In both 2019 and 2020, Ilwad was shortlisted for a Nobel Peace Prize.
