On the 11th of April 2019, Hodan Shanlayste was brutally raped and murdered in Garowe, the capital city of the Puntland region in Somalia. Hodan, a mother of two young children, was attacked in her own home and left for dead by the assailants. Hodan was reportedly pregnant at the time of her death.
Reports of this case began circulating in Somali media earlier this year due to the number of times the case had been postponed without a verdict and reassigned to different judges. The seven men suspected of committing the heinous crime were brought to court for the first time on the 15th of February 2020, but since then the case had been adjourned a total of three times for unclear reasons.
On the 26th of August 2020, a court in the Nugaal region of Puntland will hear the case again for the fourth time.
