The make-up line is targeted towards women of all ages and includes various products such as eye shadows, liquid eyeliners, eyelashes and liquid lipsticks. What did you want to be when you were growing up?
I would always dream of becoming a traveller. I wanted to become someone who would always seek new ideas, new places and new experiences.
Who were your biggest role models growing up?
My biggest role models are my parents and I will always dream to be like them.
What is one thing that you would like to tell your younger self?
Make no excuses to find a way and make self-development a priority.
What was a life-changing moment you experienced that shaped you into the woman that you are today?
For me, most of the life-changing moments have come in my life in the past 10 years. From graduating from university to setting out on my own to discover life, it’s all been life-changing.
What made you pursue your current career?
As a teenager, I always liked makeup products. I had no career guidance in those days so I pursued what I liked.
What is a typical day like for you?
A typical day for me is spent with my daughters. I love sharing my morning and night routines with them.
What has been the biggest obstacle in your professional life so far and how did you manage to overcome it?
The biggest obstacles are truly knowing yourself and being true to who you are. Growing up and spending time with friends helped me overcome my personal obstacles.
Which Somali woman inspires you and why?
The Somali woman who inspires me is my mom. She always loved me and always motivates me to achieve more. When it comes to values, I have been blessed with a role model like no other. Through the example of her own values, my mom has set footprints for me to follow which I believe will lead me to success. She has perpetually taught us to put others first, respect one’s elders, love one’s enemies, be the best person one can be, be selfless, and most importantly do everything with a happy heart.
What advice would you give to a person pursuing your chosen career?
To never give up and believe in yourself! Always be positive and keep in mind that no one is less beautiful than the other.
How would you like people to remember you?
Through the products that I’ve made with my cosmetics line UMMY THEBOSSLADY. I will continue to come up with great ideas in order to expand my business.
